Alternative Inca Trail – Salkantay And Machu Picchu (5 Days / 4 Nights)

Day 1: Cusco – Mottepata – Soraypampa
At 5 am we will leave Cusco and head to the village of Mollepata, where we will arrive around 9 am and have breakfast (not included). After loading the camping equipment on the mules we will start our hiking to Cruz Pata where we shall arrive around 1 pm for lunch. After a short break we will continue our way to Soraypampa, located at 3,850 meters (12.631 ft) above sea level. This camping area is where we will spend the night and dinner will be around 5:30 pm.

Day 2: Soraypampa – Challway
After a good breakfast at 6 am, we start the hardest hiking day of our tour at 7 am. We will walk through the site named Salkantaypanpa and head to the left side of the snowy mountain Umantay, situated next to the Salkantay Mountain. Around 12 pm we will reach the highest point of our tour (Salkantay Umantay at 4,600 meters (15,091 ft) above sea level). At this place we will enjoy the breathtaking view of different mountains, glaciers and the Salkantay Mountain. After an approximate one hour break we will have lunch at Huayrac Pampa and then start descending for approximately four hours until Challway, situated at 2,900 meter (9,514 ft) above sea level, where we will camp and stay overnight.

Day 3: Challway – La Playa (Sawayaco) – Santa Teresa Hot Spring
We start or hiking at 7 am (after having breakfast) and it will take approximately 5 hours. We will walk by Collpabamba village in the area known as Selva Nubosa (Cloudy Forest) where you will be able to observe waterfalls, fruit trees and a rich flora. We will continue heading to La Playa where we will have lunch around 1 pm. After a short break we continue hiking and you will be able to see different kinds of orchids. Then we will take van/bus (approximately 45 minute ride) to Santa Teresa (1,650 meters/ 5,423 ft above sea level), where you will relax at the hot springs. We will have dinner and spend the night in Santa Helena.

Day 4: Santa Teresa – Hydroelectric – Aguas Calientes
Our departure from Santa Teresa will be at 6 am. We will walk for approximately 5 hours thought Lucmabamba with spectacular landscape. We will also see archaeological remnants called Llactapata and soon after, see the mountains of Machu Picchu at a distance. We will continue descending to the hydroelectric where we will have lunch. Then we will continue walking to Aguas Calientes where we will take a good rest in a hostel.

Day 5: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
On our last day we will have an early breakfast at 4:30 am. After, we start our 1.5 hour walk up to Machu Picchu, where the tour guide will explain the meaning and importance of this archaeological site. You will also have the option of hiking up the Huayna Picchu Mountain from where you will have a splendid panoramic view of Machu Picchu and its surroundings. At 6:45 pm we will take the train from Aguas Calientes to the village of Ollantaytambo (2 hour ride). From there, we take a tourist bus to Cusco where we will arrive around 11 pm and finish our services.

You Must Bring:

  • Original passport
  • International Student Identification Card (in case you are student and got a discount)
  • A small and comfortable backpack with clothes for the 5 days of hiking. It should include T-shirts, shorts and warm clothes
  • Rain coat or plastic coats (which can be easily bought in Cusco)
  • Resistant shoes or tennis shoes, proper for hiking
  • Camera and batteries (please note that batteries discharge faster under cold weather conditions)
  • Hat or cap to protect against sun, rain or cold
  • Sun block
  • Repellent
  • Toilet paper
  • Snacks: cookies, protein bars, chocolate etc
  • Bottled water and water purifying tablets
  • Extra money in Soles and US Dollars

Optional Items Which Can Be Rented At The Travel Agency:
